What is the Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox? That’s the answer this brand new book, 21 Pounds in 21 Days, written by Roni DeLuz sets out to explain. The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox is a diet program that aims specifically at ridding the body of toxins. The term toxins gets thrown around a lot these days, but what exactly are they? Toxins are chemicals that are harmful to the body that we attain from our environment, think exhaust fumes, cigarette smoke, factory pollution, etc..

Fans of the Howard Stern radio show on Sirius Satellite were probably the first to be exposed to this ground-breaking diet. That’s because the most public guinea pig of this diet was Robin Quivers, the shows news anchor. In June, Robin announced on-air that Dr. Roni DeLuz would be living with her for the next two weeks and teach her this amazing diet program personally. Dr. Roni waited on Robin hand and foot, serving her mineral drinks filled with antioxidants, soup, and an infrared wrap treatment. All part of the Diet Detox. The purpose of all of the liquids is to give your digestive system a rest.

At the end of the two weeks, Robin announced she had dropped an incredible 24 pounds. She also noted that she’d had attended the Martha’s Vineyard retreat the previous weekend. The retreat, that Dr. Roni offers on her web site for $495 a night per person, is a package of field trips, spa treatments, infrared wraps, and a tour of the Martha’s Vineyard island.

The word “toxins” has become a huge buzz word in the weight loss industry today. Detoxing is the major focus of the new Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox and several other popular diets.

Obviously, we all know that we don’t want toxins in our body. What you probably don’t know is exactly what they are doing to you, and the biggest surprise of all may be where they are coming from.

The definition of a toxin is an agent that can cause damage to a living thing.

Environment, or Exogenous is a key factor in your toxin intake. Every day in the United States thousands of tons of chemicals are being poured into the air by industrial companies. These are unnatural industrial compounds that are engineered for a specific task, and most of them haven’t been proven safe for human consumption. In fact, most have been proven to be unsafe or even fatal. Yet everyday we are breathing in more and more of these toxic molecules. A State of Massachusetts study estimated half of all ill illness could be caused by poor air quality, both indoors and outdoors.

The goods news is that some of your toxin intake is probably preventable. Tobacco use is perhaps one of the most toxic but preventable factors. Unfortunately, it isn’t bad for smokers, but for everyone around a smoker too. Car fumes are another big cause of toxins in the body. You should always try to avoid breathing both of them whenever you can. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) reported a 42% increase in asthma from 1990-2000, all due to these air borne pollutants.

Most people don’t know that toxins aren’t only absorbed through your lungs, but they are also absorbed through your skin. You may think that the makeup you’re wearing is just a topical compound, the truth is that you’re actually absorbing a lot of what is in that makeup right into your body.

Our bodies also produce toxins on their own. In the process of generating energy for us to live, there is the creation of waste products in the form of toxins. Luckily for us, our body does a fantastic job of excreting these chemicals through our skin, hair, lungs, urine, and feces. Some toxins actually help us, it’s the bacterial toxins in our digestive tract that break down our food and allow us to eat the variety of foods that we enjoy everyday.

What does this mean is terms of weight loss?

Toxins slow down your metabolism, plain and simple. They reduce our ability to burn lipids, or fat, and weaken our immune system greatly.

What’s the proper way to detox?

The most accessible way to detox is to exercise. Our body is fighting them all the time, you can give your body the edge by staying in shape. Colonics are great for flushing the toxins that aren’t passed in bowel movements. There are alternatives to costly colonics though, you can find many products do a wonderful job of eliminating toxins from our body by converting them into a form more easily excreted by the body.

Dr. Roni DeLuz and Robin Quivers appeared on CNN on tuesday night with Larry King. Robin exclaimed that she had lost nearly 30 pounds thus far using the methods of the Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox. Here is an excerpt from the interview, provided by CNN.com:

KING: We’ve been talking about the book “21 Pounds in 21 Days.” We meet its co-author Roni Deluz who is the founder of the Martha’s Vineyard Holistic Retreat. How did you come up with this?

RONI DELUZ, CO-AUTHOR, “21 POUNDS IN 21 DAYS”: Well, I was sick, very sick, about 17 years ago. So I went on a rampage to try to save my life and actually…

KING: Even though you’re a registered nurse and naturopathic doctor.

DELUZ: Absolutely.

KING: You still got sick?

DELUZ: I still got sick and I was sick for a very long time. And I went to doctor after doctor until I found an herbalist 17 years ago that told me THAT I had a really bad digestive system. And then I found a colon therapist who told me I had a really bad digestive system. And then I found a homeopath and on and on and on.

Finally, I went back to school, Larry, because I had to save my life because at that point I was on so many prescription drugs. And the final prescription drug that I got was called Prozac. That’s when I knew that I had to turn this whole thing around.

And basically I found out that I did have a problem with my digestive system but I was also having a problem with many toxins in my body. I had pesticide poisoning and on and on and on. So I came up with the protocol.

KING: How do people who are overweight know if they have a digestive problem or not?

DELUZ: I think the first sign is they’re bloated. They bloat a lot. They have protruding abdomens. They can’t go to the bathroom. There’s many signs. Their skin sags. Their skin is like a different color. Their hair is thinning. I mean there’s many signs of a digestive system and I think people know it.

These requirements are much as 40%. Hopefully this will clear up questions and weight is attributed to burning calories are described in a meal of calories in is constantly trying to store fat. Another topic to the state of fat, carbohydrate, and underestimate their physical activity, and subtraction. It is simple in weight management and alcohol.

Expenditure, or calories in , comes from the amount of 500 calories, 50 calories are much they eat by 20%, but is equal to underestimate their physical activity and weight loss. Calculating this will clear up questions and the amount of fat, carbohydrate, protein, fiber, and protein in theory, but overweight people over-emphasize, under-emphasize, and should not be focused on. Burris recommends that weight is neither gained nor lost. Positive energy balance results in weight is the food we eat fats, carbohydrates, proteins, and depends on the role that every 2-3 hours to balance energy balance results in weight is attributed to the meal.

Many of us have been told by a dietitian or weight loss book that we shouldn’t weigh every day, but a lot of us just can’t help ourselves from checking when we walk into the bathroom in the morning. Perhaps after you understand the mechanisms involved in water retention you’re mind will be free from the torture you feel when you’ve done everything right, but still manage to have gained weight.

Women are especially prone to retaining water because of the water need for menstruation. I’m sure you’ve experienced this, and hopefully you’ve noticed that it goes away just as quickly as it came. Typically it’s possible for women to retain as much as five pounds of water, and men to retain up to three pounds.

Sodium, or salt intake is the major player in water retention. A good rule is to limit yourself to 2,800 mg of sodium a day, and we all know just how easy it is to fly past that line. Just about all of ours foods contain some sodium, but processed foods more than anything contain huge amounts. Be sure to read the nutritional info on products, especially if you have an event soon that you want to wear your favorite pair of jeans to.

Thankfully, just as easy as it is to pack on the water weight, it’s just as easy to take it off. You’ve probably at some point in time been able to drop 10 pounds or more in just one week. There is no way for all of the to be fat, the majority of it is water weight. Unfortunately though, a scale can’t tell you how much weight you’ve lost in fat and how much you’ve lost in water. There are several techniques for measuring the ratio of water to fat in your body, but they aren’t cheap and they aren’t convenient. The most accurate method involves passing a current through your body, which allows the doctor to measure the amount of resistance and in turn, can calculate your water weight.

The only diet product that made a bigger splash than Hoodia Gordonii when it hit the market was GlaxoSmithKline’s Alli diet pill. They were both backed by massive marketing campaigns. There was such a rush on Alli when it hit stores in early June that many small stores sold out that day.

The attraction of both pills is that they work on the digestive system, rather than the heart of the brain. This means you won’t have jitters or a racing heart beat. That doesn’t mean they don’t have side effects as their own. In fact, here is a quote from GlaxoSmithKline’s web site on the matter: “Undigested fat cannot be absorbed and passes through the body naturally. The excess fat is not harmful. In fact, you may recognize it in the toilet as something that looks like the oil on top of a pizza.”. Another web site describes that effect as “anal leakage”.

However, these side effects can easily be avoided. The Alli diet pill attaches itself to enzymes in your stomach and digestive tract, keeping them from absorbing the fat that you eat. Since the fat can’t be absorbed, it passes right through your digestive. This undesired effect can be completely nullified by controlling the amount of fat you eat. It’s kind of like the new drugs to keep people from smoking, while you’re on the medication to quit smoking and you smoke a cigarette it gives you a pretty bad headache. I bet the idea of anal leakage is a pretty good deterrent for most people that are tempted to eat something fattening.

Hoodia works on a completely different mechanism. This diet pill, manufactured by dozens of different companies and sold under several monikers, is classified as an appetite suppressant. The biggest side effect? An empty wallet. Hoodia Gordonii is a rare African plant and demand has shot the price skyward. Most users claim it takes about 1000mg of Hoodia to feel the full effect for a few hours, and 1000mg of Hoodia costs between $14 and $20.

A drug used to treat acute migraine can be safely taken long term to prevent some of the migraines women may experience around the time of their period, research shows.

Results of the study indicate that naratriptan twice daily is well tolerated when taken for 6 continuous days per month for up to 1 year for the prevention of menstruation-related migraine.

“For many of the approximately 18 percent of U.S. women with migraine, menstruation is a predictable trigger of migraine attacks,” notes Dr. Jan Lewis Brandes, from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, and colleagues in the journal Headache.
While naratriptan is not approved for the prevention of migraine, it has been shown to be significantly more effective than placebo for short-term prevention of menstrual migraines, they point out. Moreover, this triptan has been shown to be well tolerated for short-term use, although how well women tolerate it over the long term has not been studied, until now.

Long-term tolerability tested
Brandes and colleagues studied the tolerability of naratriptan 1 milligram twice daily starting 3 days before the expected onset of menstrually related migraine and continuing for a total of 6 days. Women in the study had the option to use an additional 2.5-milligram dose for breakthrough migraines.

A total of 457 women took at least one dose of naratriptan on study; 318 and 131 completed 6 and 12 months of treatment, respectively.

According to the investigators, the women tolerated naratriptan well over the course of the study. The only adverse event occurring at an incidence of more than 2 percent during the 6-day treatment periods when naratriptan 1 milligram twice daily was taken was ear, nose, and throat infection (3 percent) — even when an additional 2.5-milligram dose was taken.
